On the downslope as shortages develop faster than expectations are broken the prices of things are driven up.\u00a0\u00a0 Then people who control resources profit from accelerating their depletion which vastly worsens the problem.<\/p>\n<p>I think that\u2019s a good general explanation for why the last tree on the Easter Islands was cut down.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 It was the one with the highest profit to the owner.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 That that also effectively terminated what was probably a kind of \u201ctree worship\u201d civilization is the curiosity\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" id=\"image98\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/synapse9.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/01\/mangap.jpg\" alt=\"manGap.jpg\" width=\"155\" \/><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That particular irrationality is a big part of what we are in fact dealing with ourselves, profiting from creating scarcities, but in the end that \u2018attractor\u2019 of increased profits push the system toward an end of profits.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s like we\u2019re standing over a crack in the earth opening beneath us, and needing to get to one or another side.\u00a0\u00a0 You need some of the energy from the depleting resources caving in on you for jumping to catch hold of any of the lands of sustainability slipping away on the either side.<\/p>\n<p>Phil<\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2014<br \/>\nRe: Anselmo Pedroni<br \/>\nSent: Thursday, January 22, 2009 8:37 AM<br \/>\nSubject: Re: Barak\u2019s great &amp; tragic hopes<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t change directions after you deplete resources till they\u2019re unprofitable\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It goes the other way around, Phil, essential ressources become increasingly\u00a0expensive &amp; profitable as they approach exaustion.<br \/>\nSimple offer\/demand dynamics.
