Lawrence needs no excuse to give time to his other interests, but he
\nsaid something intriguing. He said he was also withdrawing partly
\nbecause he found something disconcerting, but he couldn\u2019t say what.
\nWhen I notice that in myself I take it as a real discovery, something
\ndeep speaking up, a beginning of insight that remains poorly formed, a
\nlittle loose thread of hidden truth. It could be many things of course,
\nbut two things come to mind. He seems accustomed to very civil
\ndiscourse, in a healthy world. We\u2019re looking at the opposite on both
\ncounts. In our discourse there\u2019s a little taste of how what\u2019s
\nphysically happening to the earth is becoming quite ugly.<\/p>\n
That does certainly distress me too, but I\u2019ve been watching it intently
\nfor a very long time, with methods designed for the purpose of studying
\nthings that are out of control, and I have my own focus and some other
\nways of letting those bitter feelings go. What I do still find
\ndistressing concerns the fact that mankind has clearly failed to build
\nappropriate knowledge for this situation, our overwhelming the earth,
\nand we\u2019re in trouble. That our conversation is \u2018mixing it up\u2019 and a
\nlittle disorderly is fundamentally good as I see it. To paraphrase a
\nfairly sound evolution theory, if you\u2019re lost and experiment with
\nbreaking the rules you\u2019re following, it\u2019s scary but you\u2019re more likely
\nto find the real path. So I don\u2019t mind people speaking quite freely.<\/p>\n
One rule I keep breaking that\u2019s a problem for some, a rule of polite
\nconversation, is by trying to speak about new truth. I also mix in
\ncolorful and poetic language, with the purpose of having fun and being
\ndisarming, perhaps adding a little context to fill out slightly
\ndifficult ideas. It doesn\u2019t usually bother me that people don\u2019t do the
\nobvious thing and ask questions. I keep hoping they\u2019ll mention where it
\nis they feel they must certainly be misunderstanding it, etc. But
\nleaving out that skeptical collaborative feedback, leaves out the
\nprocess required for people to combine perspectives in making genuinely
\nnew things. Silence, which is what you\u2019ve been giving me, gives me next
\nto nothing to go on.<\/p>\n
When I suggest we reverse principles, and instead of giving things to
\npoor communities, we buy things from them instead, what do you think I\u2019m
\ntalking about?<\/p>\n
