If you treat your information as reality you can get the entirely wrong idea, as it seems that accelerating the consumption of\u00a0depleting\u00a0resources is highly profitable… \u00a0It’s really not. \u00a0 You need other kinds of measures to discover the what level of profitability is sustainable, starting from the complete certainty that ever growing profits from anything is a false idea.<\/p>\n
Our trouble is that we built our economic culture during the period when<\/p>\n
the leeches actually did make us stronger!<\/h3>\n
…and now that the environment has reversed its response to it, we’re not ready or really even aware of the need to change our habits. \u00a0 We are even still promoting the methods of using our profit from consuming the earth to multiply our consumption of the earth, as our main cultural entertainment, and spreading that around the world for all to join in on as a permanent lifestyle. \u00a0 It’s madness, for nice people to define their world of entertainments that way, pure disassociation between mind and reality.<\/p>\n
Who are the leaches, the people who need to change their ways for our productive life support system to survive? \u00a0 Well, it’s very precisely all of us who have some surplus earnings that are managed to accumulate ever more unearned income.<\/p>\n
The cruel irony can also be our freeing insight, though, to see that the heart of the problem is as much with the retirement savings of the American middle class, as anything else. \u00a0 It’s the way their own savings are being managed that is the clear culprit,\u00a0driving the destruction of the cultures, lifestyles and communities of the American and European middle class.<\/p>\n
More generally it’s any and every institution designed to rely on leveraging savings\u00a0to multiply investment earnings. \u00a0 \u00a0A promise too good to be true like that… \u00a0a “guaranteed ever growing free lunch” no less, is a clear sign of dangerous magical thinking. \u00a0 \u00a0It relies on\u00a0bleeding\u00a0the productive\u00a0economy\u00a0and the earth at exponential rates forever… and becomes decidedly unprofitable.<\/p>\n
but going too far they\u00a0are\u00a0now draining us dry<\/h3>\n
It’s not the physical world that stopped working, but our concept of endlessly living ever more richly. \u00a0 \u00a0We’ve become the leach\u00a0bleeding\u00a0our own world dry,<\/p>\n
believing that is the way to\u00a0invigorate\u00a0it.<\/h3>\n
It’s not. \u00a0The physical world changed direction, and we need to acknowledge that and learn to follow.<\/p>\n
