{"id":3583,"date":"2017-06-10T11:06:11","date_gmt":"2017-06-10T16:06:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/?p=3583"},"modified":"2020-02-26T11:11:17","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T16:11:17","slug":"duality-required-for-organization","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/duality-required-for-organization\/","title":{"rendered":"The duality required for collective organization."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An interesting global question is, to me, raised by Ernst Ising&#8217;s work in physics &#8211; (see the arxiv pre-print on his life and work if interested.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1706.01764.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/1706.01764.pdf<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>Ising&#8217;s main work in the 1920&#8217;s was deriving a mathematical explanation for ferromagnetism, the ability of atoms in certain solid metals to develop aligned spins, and exhibit permanent magnetic fields in there surroundings as a result. \u00a0\u00a0The part of that might be of interest from a pattern science viewpoint is how his model<span class=\"text_exposed_show\">\u00a0has been successfully applied to numerous collective phenomena, both other emergent collective atomic behaviors like magnetism as well as emergent collective macroscopic behaviors like the emergence of organization in crowds. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3584\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3584\" style=\"width: 425px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3584\" src=\"https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ising-model-300x115.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ising-model-300x115.jpg 300w, https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ising-model-150x58.jpg 150w, https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ising-model-768x295.jpg 768w, https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ising-model-1024x393.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/Ising-model.jpg 1088w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3584\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ising&#8217;s general equation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span class=\"text_exposed_show\">The math, honestly, is beyond me, but there&#8217;s an interesting assumption in the work that might be discussed from a\u00a0pattern science perspective, that the math rests on treating such phenomena as arising from purely local interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"text_exposed_show\">\n<blockquote><p>Ising Said: \u201cSo, if we do not assume [ ] that [ ] quite distant elements exert an in\ufb02uence on each other [ ] we do not succeed in explaining ferromagnetism from our assumptions. \u00a0It is [thus] to be expected that this assertion also holds true\u00a0for a spatial model in which only<br \/>\nelements in the nearby environment interact with each other.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">What I suspect is that there&#8217;s more of a wave\/partical type duality present, involving both local and contextual interaction<br \/>\nin bringing about collective organization.<\/h4>\n<p>In the collective phenomena we observe there is certainly has a strong local character, whether it&#8217;s snowflake formation, ecologies, social movements or probably also the punctuated equilibria of emerging species. \u00a0All such collective phenomena seem to arise in relatively small centers and then spread mysteriously. \u00a0They also seem to require specially primed and fertile environments, as global conditions that are receptive to the local accumulation of collective designs.<\/p>\n<p>So my question is who else is talking about this pattern of nature. \u00a0 \u00a0Is this raised in Christopher Alexander&#8217;s &#8220;The Nature of Order&#8221; or other pattern language writings?
