{"id":1275,"date":"2010-08-06T00:00:01","date_gmt":"2010-08-06T04:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.synapse9.com\/signals\/?p=1275"},"modified":"2010-08-06T00:00:01","modified_gmt":"2010-08-06T04:00:01","slug":"the-catch-why-you-read-natures-models","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/synapse9.com\/signals\/the-catch-why-you-read-natures-models\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThe Catch\u201d, why you read nature\u2019s models"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>My friend George posted a good article on modeling the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/questioneverything.typepad.com\/question_everything\/2010\/08\/more-modeling-in-biophysical-economics.html\">approaching decline of energy returns on energy invested in the earth (EROI)<\/a>, and I mentioned \u201cthe Catch\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2014-<br \/>\nOne of the difficulties with complex theoretical models is that they all need to assume the parts are following rules.<\/p>\n<p>How economies work, of course, is with \u201danimate learning-bots\u201d (that&#8217;s &#8220;us&#8221;), all exploring the world and discovering new relationships all the time. That\u2019s why I tend to take the limiting conditions nature displays as a guide, based on her own synthesis of the whole process (like the switch from multiplying to diminishing returns on the success of the search for stuff).<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>When you learn to identify them they display what the system as a whole actually IS finding and learning from its environment, using the system itself as a better guide to what ALL the parts are learning at once.<\/p>\n<p>Have you considered what evidence in the environment you\u2019d look for to see if the system as a whole was approaching a danger point of vanishing net energy? One clear sign seems to be where the market mechanisms \u201chit a snag\u201d and start displaying emergent systemic behavior where there should be smooth market adjustments.<\/p>\n<p>A field called \u201ceconophysics\u201d as mentioned in an article in the NY Times.
